The DEO is the head of educational
administration in the district, he looks after
the administration of the Secondary and Higher
Secondary Education. The administration of
Elementary Education is being undertaken by the
Sub Divisional Education Officer. Lunglei is
divided into four (4) sub divisions viz.,
Hnahthial, Lunglei N, Lunglei S, and Lungsen Sub
Divisions. There are two subordinate officers in
the DEO office, one Assistant District Education
Officer (post under creation) and one Hindi
Propagation Officer.

EDUCATIONALLY BACKWARD
BLOCK:
Among the many Educationally Backward Blocks in
the country, Lungsen is identified as one of
them. Due to this much importance is given to
this Block. The State government, on 3rd Nov
2008 opened a new Education Sub Division at
Lungsen(the post is still undergoing creation)
which is an important step towards educational
improvement. Moreover, Lungsen Block is the
first recipient of the Mid-day Meal scheme, when
it was made available for the Middle School
Sections.
A programme called Scheme
for strengthening of boarding and hostel
facilities for girl students was operational
during the Tenth Plan. Under this scheme Lungsen
Village was selected for the establishment of
Model School and Girls Hostel.
INCENTIVE TO GIRL CHILD IN SECONDARY
EDUCATION:
Education of girls is the primary focus in RMSA.
As there is a gross shortage of Secondary
Schools, the dropout rate of girls is extremely
high mainly in the North Eastern States. To
encourage greater participation of girls in the
Secondary and Higher Secondary stage, a
“National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for
Secondary Education” has been launched in 2008.
For promoting and retention of a girl child in
Secondary Education, the following scheme is
operationalised:
-A sum of Rs 3000/- is
deposited in the name of an eligible girl as
fixed deposit and when she has attained the age
of eighteen years, have passed Class-X, have
been in school for at least 2 years after
admission to Cl-IX and that she is not married
at the time of 18 yrs, she will be eligible to
receive the said amount along with the interest.
- All ST/SC and General
KGBV Girl child who are currently studying in
Cl-IX in Govt and Govt Aided Schools who has not
attain 16 yrs are eligible.
MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP
The Ministry of Minority Affairs has introduced
a scheme of Pre Matric Scholarship for students
belonging to the minority communities. The
objective of the scheme is to award scholarship
to the meritorious students belonging to
economically weaker section.
- The scholarship will be
given to those students pursuing studies from
Cl-I to Cl- X, in Govt and Private Schools.
- Maintenance allowance
will be credited to the student’s bank account.
- Students should have not
less than 50% marks in the previous final
examination.
- A scholarship holder
under this scheme will not avail of any other
scholarship.
- The annual income of the
student’s parents should not exceed Rs 1 Lakh.
- Scholarship will not be
given to more than 2 students in a family.
ON GOING PROJECT :
Though training and data collection have been
done since 2008, RMSA is hoped to be operational
before the end of this financial year, i.e.
2009-2010
Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) is a
scheme for Universalization of Secondary
Education and is expected to be carried out in a
mission mode.This scheme is designed along the
lines of the on-going Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan
(SSA).RMSA seeks to make Secondary Education
available, accessible, and affordable for the
age group of chidren between 14-18years.
The vision for secondary education is to make
good quality education available to all young
persons in the age group of 14-18years.With this
vision in mind, the following is to be achieved:
- To provide a secondary school within a
reasonable distance of any habitation.
- Universal access of
secondary education 2017
- Universal retention by
2020
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
- To ensure that all secondary schools have
physical facilities, staffs and supplies.
- To improve access to
secondary schooling to all young persons.
- To ensure that no child
is deprived of secondary education of
satisfactory quality
- To improve quality of
secondary education.
Under RMSA four Middle Schools are proposed to
be upgraded to High Schools within Lunglei
District.

ACHIEVEMENT:
- RMSA Lunglei District Annual Plan 2009-2010
has already been completed.
- During 2008-2009 Academic
Session, as per Incentive to Girl Child Scheme,
408 girls has opened Bank Account in their names
at State Bank Of India, Lunglei Branch.
- During 2009-2010 Academic
Session all Cl-IX girls who has not attained 16
yrs of age were also availed the said scheme.
- In 2008-2009 there were
323 students receiving Pre Matric Scholarship
under Minority Scholarship.
- During 2009-2010, 954
students are selected for Fresh Cases and 281
students are selected for Renewal Cases for
Minority Scholarship.

EXAMINATION
The District Examination Committee has
successfully conducted the MSLC, MESLC, & PSLC
Examinations under the Chairmanship of the
District Education Officer, for the last four
years. Last year, the results were published by
